A 10-month initiative that addresses the weak culture of reading and writing among working-class youth in Johannesburg’s inner city and townships. Key activities include writing workshops, a short story competition evaluated by independent moderators, and the production and launch of the Batjha Kaofela anthology. 114 learners submitted stories, with the final book launch attended by 380 school learners, significantly exceeding the initial target of 100 direct beneficiaries. The Jozi Book Fair School Youth Project has maintained a consistent community presence since 2011. The 2024 edition culminated in the 9th edition of the Batjha Kaofela anthology, featuring 19 stories by 18 young authors that captured community turmoil and collective hope. The project successfully re-established relationships with schools post-COVID-19, setting a strong foundation for expansion in 2025.
