The programme created a safe environment at Winnie Ngwekazi primary school where children received daily nutritional support and tailored 2 academic tutoring. It featured a robust psychosocial component including anonymous “help boxes” and counselling to address trauma and children’s emotional needs. Additionally, the initiative integrated digital literacy using tablets, life skills development on topics like HI V and AIDS prevention, and family outreach through food parcels and workshops for caregivers. 80 direct youth beneficiaries, 60 direct families and approximately 600 parents (98% of these were female and 2% were male) were reached by the project. Additionally, 10 children in vulnerable child-headed households received additional food parcels per month and 20 youth were assisted with digital education. In total, we can count 760 direct and indirect beneficiaries. All beneficiaries showed improved academic performance and no dropouts were reported at the end of the project. Notable successes included the distribution of essential school materials, art therapy, and the implementation of a pen-pal programme for knowledge-sharing among the youth. Despite facing obstacles like local utility outages and community protests, the project remains committed to transitioning to a 100% digital environment and launching new climate resilience initiatives in future.
